Also known as: 向上铰链, 手腕上翘
At the halfway-back position (hands at hip height), the club shaft should be pointing roughly at the sky. This means if the shaft is already pointing at the target (too flat) or at the ground (too steep), your wrist hinge timing or direction is off. Use a mirror or video to check this position.
Focus on the lead wrist in particular. This means at the top of the backswing, the back of the lead wrist and the back of the lead hand should be in roughly the same plane. This means not cupped (bent backward toward the sky) or excessively bowed (bent toward the ground). This means as this wrist position directly controls the clubface angle at the top and through impact.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a down-the-line camera angle, wrist hinge is visible at the top of the backswing as a clear angle between the club shaft and the lead forearm. This means ideally close to 90°. Too little hinge (flat wrists) shows the shaft and arm nearly in a straight line at the top. Too much hinge (over-cocking) can produce the shaft going past parallel. From a face-on angle, proper hinge at the halfway-back position (hands at hip height) shows the shaft pointing roughly vertically. This means neither laid off nor across the line. This means indicating the wrists have begun hinging correctly in response to the swinging weight of the club.
Common mistakes
- Hinging too early in the takeaway. This means an early wrist hinge picks up the club on a steep, outside path and is a common cause of over-the-top downswings. The takeaway should extend the club away from the body before the wrists begin to hinge.
- Hinging in the wrong direction — the lead wrist should hinge upward (radial deviation), not outward. The incorrect direction puts the club on a poor plane and makes it very difficult to return to a good impact position.
- Gripping too tightly to hinge adequately. This means a tight grip restricts wrist mobility and prevents a full hinge. This results in arms-only power rather than using the wrist-hinge elastic energy. Grip pressure should be firm enough for control but loose enough for joint mobility.
- Actively un-hinging at the start of the downswing — wrist hinge is only valuable if maintained through most of the downswing. Golfers who immediately release the hinge at transition lose all the stored lag energy before it can be delivered to the ball.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage estimates wrist hinge angle at key positions. This means especially hands at hip height in the backswing and at the top of the backswing. This comes from down-the-line video using pose estimation. Because wrist joint positions are small and require good video resolution for accurate detection, the system labels these observations with confidence levels reflecting the available video quality.
