Definition

Beginner tip

Start with standard positioning and watch where each batter's first ball goes — use that information to shade yourself appropriately for the rest of the game.

Advanced note

Pre-scout opposing lineups when possible and arrive at games with pre-set positioning charts for each batter. Competitive slow-pitch defense is almost entirely about positioning before the pitch.

Example

How it shows up on video

Overall defensive positioning is visible from wide overhead or centerfield camera angles showing all seven or ten fielders before each pitch. A well-positioned team looks balanced with each fielder covering their zone, shaded toward the batter's tendencies. Poor positioning shows obvious gaps or clustering where multiple fielders converge on one zone.

Common mistakes

  • Playing the same standard positioning for every batter without any adjustment for pull tendency or exit velocity
  • Outfielders playing too shallow for power hitters, allowing routine fly balls to go over their heads for extra bases
  • Corner infielders playing too deep, giving up infield singles to slow rollers that a closer position would prevent
  • Not adjusting positioning after seeing the first at-bat — early information should immediately update your defensive alignment
