Before implementing any shift, confirm through multiple at-bats that the batter reliably pulls the ball — don't shift on hunches alone.
In competitive leagues, combine spray charts with count-based tendencies — some batters pull early in counts but go opposite field when behind. Shift to their true tendency, not their overall tendency.
Example
How it shows up on video
A defensive shift is a visible realignment of fielders away from standard positions toward one side of the field based on a batter's tendencies. In slow-pitch, this might mean stacking four or five defenders on the pull side for a known dead-pull hitter. This is apparent from any overhead or wide-angle camera view.
Common mistakes
- Shifting without confirming the batter reliably pulls the ball — one or two observations isn't enough data for a shift
- Leaving an obvious gap on the opposite field that an alert batter exploits by intentionally hitting the other way
- Failing to communicate the shift to all seven or ten fielders, resulting in one player playing the wrong position
- Shifting against a batter who can easily adjust — experienced hitters will simply go the opposite way against a heavy shift
