围栏距离是指从本垒板到外野围栏之间测得的距离。标准慢投场地沿边线一般为275到315英尺,中外野为275到325英尺,不过休闲球场的实际尺寸差异很大。
围栏距离直接影响本垒打的产生数量,进而决定本垒打限制规则的重要性。较短的围栏(不足280英尺)会拉高全场的力量数据;更深的围栏(300英尺以上)则让“打向空档”的技术型打击变得更有价值。在陌生场地比赛的球队,应在打击练习前先侦察围栏距离,以校准拉打方向的进攻力度、外野防守深度,以及是否可能触及本垒打限制。围栏深度不均(某一边线更短)也应特别留意,以便安排防守转移。

- Ignoring how fence distance interacts with the ball spec — a lively ball at 275 feet plays the same as a dead ball at 300 feet
- Not adjusting your mental target during batting practice when the fence distance differs from your home field
