Fence Distance

Also known as: home run distance, outfield dimensions, fence depth

Definition

Beginner tip

When playing at an unfamiliar field, take a few minutes to walk the warning track and get a feel for fence distances before warmups. This means it recalibrates your power expectations.

Advanced note

In competitive slow-pitch, fence distance directly influences lineup construction. This means shorter fences may make a gap-hitting contact bat more valuable than a pure power hitter who elevates everything.

Example

Pagar left field berjarak 265 kaki — pendek untuk ukuran slow pitch — sehingga HR limit tim tercapai pada inning ketiga; lineup pun menyesuaikan diri dengan line drive gap-to-gap untuk sisa pertandingan.

How it shows up on video

Fence distance isn't directly visible in swing mechanics but at its core shapes strategy — a 300-foot fence rewards power hitters differently than a 250-foot fence. On video, fence distance becomes apparent when comparing how far balls carry before clearing the wall. This affects outfield positioning depth and the value of different swing types.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging for the fence regardless of the field dimensions — a 275-foot park rewards gap power over pure launch angle
  • Outfielders positioning at the same depth regardless of fence distance — shallower fences require different depth reads
  • Ignoring how fence distance interacts with the ball spec — a lively ball at 275 feet plays the same as a dead ball at 300 feet
  • Not adjusting your mental target during batting practice when the fence distance differs from your home field
