Peel drop (drop pelé)

Un peel drop est une variante précise de la drop ball dans laquelle la lanceuse « pèle » la main vers l’extérieur au lâcher, imprimant un topspin qui fait casser la balle brusquement vers le bas et vers le côté du gant.
Alors qu’une drop ball standard utilise un claquement du poignet vers l’avant, le peel drop implique de tourner la paume vers l’extérieur et de traîner la balle du bout des doigts dans un mouvement de pelage. Use the peel drop to attack the bottom of the zone in fastball counts. This means the fastball-like spin and arm speed sell the pitch until the late dive produces rolled-over ground balls.

How it shows up on video
Look for a fastball-like release with the fingers pulling up the back of the ball as the hand passes the hip, the ball peeling straight off the fingertips. The pitch holds its line before diving down late; hitters read fastball, swing over the top, and beat it into the ground.
Common mistakes
- Starting the peel motion too early in the arm circle rather than saving it for the release-point moment
- Producing insufficient topspin because the fingers don't fully drag across the ball in the peeling motion
- Turning the hand over the top at release — that produces the turnover drop, a different variant with its own timing
- Hitters reading it as a flat fastball and swinging over the top as it dives late
