ドロップショット

ドロップショットとは、ネットをかろうじて越え、相手のキッチンで失速する、柔らかく打たれたボールのことで、相手を前方へ引き寄せ、その背後のコートを開く。
ドロップショットは、ベースラインにキャンプしている、あるいは強いショットを予期している相手を突く。オープンなパドルフェースと減速するストロークによる繊細なタッチショットは、ボールがわずかなマージンでネットを越え、相手が到達する前にキッチンで2回バウンドすることを可能にする。鍵は偽装だ——ドロップショットは、最後の瞬間までドライブのように見えるべきだ。より高いレベルでは、ドロップショットはしばしば、相手をキッチンラインから引き離し、ロブのためのスペースを作るために使われる。
ドロップショットのメカニクスは減速を中心に据えている。パドルはボールに向かって加速し、その後、打ち抜くのではなく、インパクトで柔らかくなる。この制動する動きこそが、フルスイングからのマッスルメモリーなしにタッチを生み出すものだ。ボールを打ち抜いてしまう選手は、それを補うためにパドルフェースを開いてしまい、ドロップショットの試みをネットに入れてしまう傾向がある。制動し、開いたフェースからボールが跳ね出るのに任せる選手は、理想的な弧を生み出す。
より高いレベルでは、ドロップショットは主に、密集したキッチンプレーヤーを前方へ引き寄せ、その背後にロブを開くための武器として展開される。どの相手が前へ出てくるか——そしてどの相手が後退するか——を認識することが、ドロップショットの最良の戦術的タイミングを形作る。ロブを尊重してポジションを保つ選手に対しては、ドロップショットそのものが、単なるセットアップではなく、勝利のプレーとなる。
Think of catching the ball softly with the paddle face rather than hitting it. This means the mental image of absorbing the ball produces the braking motion that creates touch.
Use the drop shot after establishing a drive threat in the rally. This means if you have not driven yet, the opponent will not respect the drop as a deceptive shot.

Common mistakes
- Driving through the ball at contact rather than decelerating, sending the shot long or into the net
- Opening the paddle face so far to compensate for power that the ball floats mid-court and becomes attackable
- Telegraphing the drop with a shortened backswing that the opponent reads immediately and charges forward
- Using the drop shot when both opponents are already at the kitchen line, where they can easily dink it back
