Definition

Beginner tip

Aim to finish with both hands above your lead shoulder and your belt buckle facing the pitcher. This means if you can check both at your finish position, your follow-through is complete.

Advanced note

Practice swings where you deliberately hold your finish for two full seconds after contact to train muscle memory for a complete follow-through rather than an instinctive deceleration after the ball leaves the bat.

Example

How it shows up on video

A complete follow-through on video shows the bat finishing high on the lead side of the body (above the lead shoulder) with the trail shoulder rotating fully toward the pitcher and the hips completing their turn past the ball. An abbreviated follow-through shows the bat stopping at or just past contact, often indicating the hitter was decelerating into the ball rather than swinging through it. The trail foot position at the finish — balanced on the toe with the heel lifted — confirms the hip rotation was complete.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping the swing at contact to try to control ball direction. This actually reduces bat speed through the contact zone by beginning deceleration before hitting the ball
  • Rolling the top hand over too early, causing the follow-through to wrap around the lead side rather than driving through and above the lead shoulder
  • Not completing hip rotation through the follow-through, leaving the hips square to the pitcher rather than finishing past them, which stalls the kinetic chain mid-swing
  • Thinking the follow-through does not affect the ball. This is because contact is already made. This means it does. This is. This is because the follow-through reflects whether the swing was accelerating or decelerating at the moment of contact

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage analyzes the follow-through completion from side-on and front-on video, measuring bat finish height and trail-shoulder rotation to identify abbreviated or top-hand-rollover follow-through patterns.
