Hip Hinge
Practice the hip hinge as a separate exercise. This means stand 6 inches from a wall, then push your hips backward until they touch the wall. At the same time, keeping your spine straight and your knees only slightly bent. This is the hip hinge. This means the feeling of hips going back and spine going forward. This means and it translates directly to golf posture when you repeat it with a club.
Test your hip hinge capacity with a dowel rod. This means hold a dowel along your spine touching your head, mid-back, and tailbone, then hinge forward from your hips. This means at a correct golf setup angle, the dowel should maintain contact at all three points. If the lower back arches away from the dowel (anterior tilt / loss of lower back contact), your hip flexors are limiting the hinge. If the mid-back arches away (C-posture), your thoracic mobility is the limiting factor.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a down-the-line camera angle, the hip hinge is directly visible at address as the forward angle of the spine from the hips toward the ball. This means about 25–45° from vertical depending on club length. A proper hinge shows a straight spine with the angle originating clearly at the hip joints, not from a curved lower back. During the swing, hip hinge maintenance is visible from down-the-line as the spine angle staying consistent between address and impact, with early extension showing as the hips moving toward the ball and the spine angle decreasing.
Common mistakes
- Bending the spine rather than hinging from the hips. This means a spine-bend (C-posture) restricts rotation and is a structural limitation that will cost both flexibility and consistency throughout the swing.
- Confusing hip hinge with squatting. This means pushing the hips back during a hip hinge is correct. Pushing the knees forward (squatting) is different and should not be the primary movement. In a hip hinge, the hips go backward while the spine goes forward.
- Losing the hip hinge at the start of the downswing (early extension). This means straightening up from the hip hinge at impact is one of the most common and consequential setup/swing faults. Physical training to strengthen the glutes in the hinged position directly addresses this.
- Using a hip hinge that is too deep or too shallow for the club — the correct hinge angle varies by club length. Hitting a driver from a deep hip hinge (wedge address angle) requires compensations to make solid contact, and vice versa.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage measures hip hinge quality from down-the-line video by estimating the spine angle at address and comparing it to the spine angle at impact. The system can identify insufficient hinge (too upright), excessive hinge (too bent), and loss of hinge (early extension) through the swing. These observations are most reliable from a clearly positioned down-the-line camera that captures the full body from feet to head.
