Also known as: 肌肉背式, 凹背式铁杆

Definition

Beginner tip

If you are a recreational golfer with a handicap above 10, play cavity backs. The distance and consistency benefit on off-center hits (which are most of your shots) sharply outweighs any feedback benefit from blades. You will score better, feel less frustrated, and learn faster because the ball goes where you aim more often.

Advanced note

Test blade versus cavity back impact using impact tape on the face: hit 20 shots with each and overlay the impact patterns. The dispersion of the blade marks versus the cavity back marks will directly show you how much your contact quality varies. The size of the typical blade pattern dispersion tells you how much forgiveness you are currently giving up or benefiting from.

Example

How it shows up on video

Blade versus cavity back equipment is directly visible in video setup footage. This means the thin, compact profile of a blade versus the thicker, wider, more rectangular appearance of a cavity back. During impact, blade hits produce more visible club head rotation on off-center strikes (visible from slow-motion overhead or face-on video with high frame rate). At the same time, cavity back clubs remain more stable. The ball trajectory after off-center hits differs between the two: blade misses fly more erratically; cavity back misses remain more consistent in direction.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing blades for status reasons rather than performance. This means many recreational golfers play blades. This is because they look "tour-level." Blades used by recreational golfers cost distance and consistency on every non-center hit. This is the majority of shots for most handicap levels.
  • Assuming cavity backs preclude shot shaping. This means modern tour irons (small cavity or "players cavity" designs) offer significant workability. At the same time, providing more forgiveness than a true blade. Many touring pro players play compact cavity backs rather than full muscle blades.
  • Not understanding the game-improvement iron spectrum. This means cavity backs range from highly forgiving game-improvement irons (wide sole, large cavity, hollow construction) to minimally forgiving "players irons" (compact cavity with moderate perimeter weighting). The choice is not binary.
  • Using mis-sold "player's irons" without understanding their forgiveness level. This means a boutique "player's iron" may be marketed as premium but provide less MOI than a mainstream game-improvement iron. MOI data (available from independent reviews) is more reliable than marketing language.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can observe iron type from video and note relevant context (blade versus cavity) for interpreting contact quality observations. The system notes that the same swing with a blade produces more visible off-center consequences than with a cavity back. This should be accounted for when assessing consistency from video analysis. Club identification is contextual and based on visible head shape traits.
