(Casting from the Top)

Definition

Beginner tip

The best feel for eliminating casting from the top is the "hold the angle" thought at transition. This means simply feel that your wrists stay hinged as the first move of your downswing is the left hip bumping toward the target. If the hip moves first and the wrists stay hinged for a second, you have addressed both the sequencing and the lag at the same time.

Advanced note

Use a "listen for the swish" drill with an alignment stick or a club held upside down. This means the maximum speed sound (swish) should occur at or past the impact point. This means if you hear the swish well before impact, you are casting from the top. Repeatedly hitting that late-swish position trains the timing of the energy release to coincide with impact rather than preceding it.

Example

How it shows up on video

Casting from the top is visible from a down-the-line camera angle as the shaft immediately losing its lag angle at the very start of the downswing. This means the wrist angle releases within the first few frames of the downswing motion. The shaft appears to "shoot" forward from the top rather than dropping below the backswing plane. At the same time from face-on, the shoulders and upper body are seen initiating the downswing (rotating before the hips move), connecting the over-the-top path to the casting arm action.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging "harder" to fix a casting-from-the-top pattern — more effort amplifies the cast rather than eliminating it. The solution is a slower, more sequential downswing where the lower body fires first and the arms lag behind.
  • Treating casting from the top as a hands-and-arms problem alone — casting from the top is always connected to over-the-top sequencing. Fixing the hands without fixing the transition produces a different but equally problematic release pattern.
  • Trying to consciously hold the lag at the top. This means deliberate lag holding at the transition produces tension that makes the cast reflex stronger on the following swing. The lag should be maintained passively by allowing the lower body to lead.
  • Practicing with maximum effort — high-effort swings reinforce the casting-from-the-top pattern because effort triggers the upper body. Transition drills and tempo training at 60–70% effort are more effective for retraining the sequence.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage identifies casting from the top by analyzing the shaft angle change in the first frames of the downswing from down-the-line video. The sudden release of the wrist angle at the very beginning of the downswing (versus a maintained angle that releases later) is a clear indicator that the system can flag when video quality and frame rate are sufficient. Confidence labels reflect the resolution available for this early-downswing analysis.
