Definition

Beginner tip

For a simple grip pressure baseline. This means grip the club and shake hands with an imaginary partner. At the same time, holding it. This means the pressure you would use for a firm but pleasant handshake is about the correct grip pressure for most golf shots.

Advanced note

During practice, experiment with grip pressure across a 10-shot set. This means hit two shots at 3/10 (very light), two at 5/10 (moderate), two at 7/10 (firm), and two at 9/10 (very tight). Note what happens to club speed, face feel, and contact quality at each level. This means this builds kinesthetic awareness that lets you calibrate grip pressure on demand for different shot types.

Example

How it shows up on video

Grip pressure is not directly visible in video, but its effects are observable. Excessive grip pressure creates visible tension in the forearms, which appear contracted or "knotted" at address and throughout the swing. It also produces a restricted, arms-only swing without the fluid rotation of the wrists through impact. Correct light grip pressure is visible as a fluid, loose arm swing with forearms that appear relaxed at address and through the impact zone. The release arc — the smooth rotation of the forearms through impact — is fuller and more natural when grip pressure is appropriate.

Common mistakes

  • Gripping harder when nervous or under pressure. This means performance anxiety increases grip pressure reflexively. This decreases touch and feel at exactly the moment they are most needed. A pre-shot grip pressure routine (consciously starting at 4/10) helps counteract this.
  • Maintaining the same grip pressure for all shots. This means distance control shots (short game, approach) benefit from lighter pressure to maximize feel. Longer shots use slightly more pressure. Varying grip pressure by shot type improves touch.
  • Gripping harder to prevent the club from slipping — if the club slips at impact, the grips are likely worn smooth and need replacing. Gripper tighter than control requires creates tension throughout the chain. New grips solve the actual problem.
  • Confusing grip pressure with grip firmness. This means grip pressure refers to how hard you squeeze. Grip firmness refers to how the hands are placed on the club (strong, neutral, weak). They are related but independent variables.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage cannot directly measure grip pressure from video. But the system can observe indirect indicators. This means forearm tension visible at address, the quality and fluidity of the release arc through impact, and whether wrist joints appear to move freely or be locked through the impact zone. These behavioral indicators provide context for assessing grip pressure effects without direct measurement.
