Think 'knob to the ball' — keep your hands on a direct path to the hitting zone to stay on plane with the pitch.
A slight positive attack angle (2–5°) can optimize launch angle in slow-pitch. But anything steeper than 10° typically sacrifices too much contact probability for the power gained.
Example
How it shows up on video
An uppercut swing appears on video as a bat path that rises steeply through the hitting zone, often causing the batter to dip their back shoulder sharply and swing under the ball. The barrel arrives below the pitch trajectory, producing pop-ups or total misses rather than solid contact.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the back shoulder too early and tilting the entire swing plane upward
- Trying to lift the ball rather than driving through it with a level or slight downward path
- Letting the hands drop below the ball before contact, losing bat speed and direction
- Confusing a slight upward swing angle with a true uppercut that sacrifices contact quality
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can measure attack angle in degrees, flagging extreme positive angles that indicate an uppercut pattern and correlating them with strikeout and pop-up rates.
Frequently asked questions
