Extensión a través del contacto

Also known as: extensión completa, extensión

Definition

Beginner tip

Imagine reaching out to push a door open with both hands as you make contact. This means this mental image drives full arm extension rather than an early pull-off.

Advanced note

Film your swing from behind and above to track the barrel path after contact. If the barrel turns inward within 6 inches of contact rather than driving outward for 12 or more inches, you are cutting off extension prematurely.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Look for the lead arm to be fully straight at or just after the contact point — a bent lead elbow at contact indicates early pull-off. The barrel should be pointing outward toward the pitcher at maximum extension, not pulling back toward the hip. Combine front-view and side-view video. This means front view reveals elbow collapse, side view shows whether the barrel is still moving outward or has already begun to roll inward.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the top hand off the bat too early, which collapses the lead arm and kills extension through the hitting zone
  • Spinning the torso too aggressively past contact, dragging the arms inward before the barrel can reach full extension
  • Making contact with a bent trail elbow rather than using the trail arm to drive the barrel outward through the zone
  • Lunging at the ball early so that by contact the arms are already past maximum extension and have begun rolling over

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage measures the lead-arm angle at the contact frame and flags swings where the elbow exceeds 30 degrees of flexion at contact as short-extension patterns for coaching review.
