Aturan Selisih Poin

Also known as: slaughter rule, run-ahead rule, mercy rule

Definition

Beginner tip

Know your league's run rule before every game. This means being aware of what triggers the rule helps you set realistic goals when trailing by a significant margin.

Advanced note

When safely leading late in a potential run-rule game, prioritize outs over hits. This means a quick defensive half-inning ends the game faster. This prevents the opponent from staging a late rally that changes the math.

Example

How it shows up on video

The run rule (mercy rule) ends a game early when one team builds an insurmountable lead, typically 15 or 20 runs after a set number of innings. Video of a run-rule game reveals the gameplay shift. This means the trailing team often becomes more aggressive trying to score quickly. At the same time, the leading team manages the game safely to preserve their advantage.

Common mistakes

  • Relaxing too early when leading by a large margin. This allows the opponent to score enough runs to get back in the game before the rule kicks in
  • Not knowing the specific run rule for your league — some use 20 runs after 3 innings, others 15 after 4 or 5 innings
  • Assuming that being behind by 14 means the game is over — teams have come back to avoid the run rule with a big inning
  • Pitching to your own weakness late in a run-rule scenario instead of limiting further damage to keep the score manageable
