ロールショット

ロールショットとは、重いトップスピンで打たれるグラウンドストロークかミッドコートのショットのことで、相手が前進してくる際にその足元へ鋭く沈み込み、クリーンなリセットを妨げる。
ロールショットは、ドライブとディンクの間のギャップを橋渡しする。ミッドコートから、選手はボールの背面を通して急な角度で上へブラッシングし、トップスピンを生み出す。これがボールを一瞬上昇させ、その後素早く落下させる——相手がトランジションで前進する際、その靴ひものゾーンを狙う。勢いと沈み込みを組み合わせているため、フラットなドライブよりもリセットが難しく、標準的なディンクよりも攻撃が難しい。クロスコートのロールショットは、中央の低いネットとより長い対角線の飛行経路を活用し、スピンの時間を最大化する。
ミッドコートからのロールショットは、相手がトランジションゾーンにいるとき——すでに前進しているが、まだキッチンラインに落ち着いていないとき——に最も効果的だ。この瞬間に靴ひものゾーンを狙うことは、相手を最悪のコンタクトの高さで捕らえる。ドライブするには低すぎ、クリーンにディンクするにはキッチンから遠すぎるのだ。ロールショットは本質的に、前進してくる相手に対してトランジションゾーンを武器化する。
一貫したロールショットには、急な低から高へのスイングパスの角度——フラットなドライブより急で、トップスピンディンクより浅い——の意図的な練習が必要だ。有用なドリルは、キッチンラインの3フィート内側に靴ひもの高さのターゲットコーンを設置し、ミッドコートからそこへロールする練習をすることだ。コーンに着地するボールは理想的なロールショットの実行を表す。より高く跳ねるボールは勢いが多すぎることを示す。手前に落ちるボールはショットの前方への推進力が不十分であることを示す。
Think of the roll shot as hitting the bottom half of the ball with your paddle face brushing upward. This means the image of brushing the underside produces the low-to-high path on its own.
Time your roll shot to land at the shoelace zone of an opponent who is still one or two steps from the kitchen line. This is the moment they have the least ability to reset cleanly.

How it shows up on video

Common mistakes
- Using a flat swing path instead of a low-to-high brush, producing a drive that lacks the dipping effect
- Hitting the roll shot from inside the kitchen transition when a dink would be safer and more controlled
- Targeting the body rather than the feet, allowing the opponent to block with a full arm swing
- Over-spinning the ball with insufficient forward pace, causing it to drop into the net before crossing
