Achterzwaai
A simple backswing check. This means at the top of your backswing, your lead shoulder should be under your chin (for a right-hander). This means if you can feel your chin touching your lead shoulder at the top, your turn is sufficient. If there is a large gap, your shoulder turn is probably short and limiting your coil.
Use the "resistance band drill" to train coil. This means place a resistance band around your hips in the backswing direction and make backswings against the resistance. This means the band prevents sway by holding the trail hip. This forces you to rotate rather than slide, and directly training the muscular coil that powers the downswing.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, the backswing should show the left shoulder moving toward the chin (for a right-hander) as the body coils, with the head staying relatively still and the trail knee maintaining its flex. Swaying (the entire body moving to the right) is visible as the head tracking outside its starting position. From a down-the-line angle, the backswing should show the club tracking up the correct plane. This means the shaft at the halfway-back position pointing along the target line. The club at the top of the backswing on a plane that bisects the shoulder joint at address.
Common mistakes
- Confusing "big backswing" with "powerful backswing". This means a longer backswing provides more time to accelerate the club. But if it comes at the cost of posture or sequencing quality, it reduces rather than adds power. Shorter, more controlled backswings are often more repeatable.
- Swaying instead of turning. This means moving the entire body away from the target (lateral sway) mimics a turn but does not actually coil the muscles or load the trail hip correctly. The hip must rotate, not sway.
- Losing spine angle in the backswing (standing up). This means rising out of the address posture during the backswing changes the geometry of the swing and makes correct impact positions much harder to achieve on the downswing.
- Focusing on the backswing position rather than the transition — the backswing exists to set up the transition. A golfer who achieves a technically perfect backswing position but then fires the upper body first in the transition has wasted the setup.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage analyzes backswing quality from face-on and down-the-line video by observing shoulder turn depth, spine angle maintenance, trail knee flex, head position stability, and shaft plane at the halfway-back and top-of-backswing positions. These observations are labeled with confidence levels based on video quality and camera angle.
