Back-Side Mechanics

Also known as: achterkant-drive, trail-side-mechaniek, achterheup-drive

Definition

Back-side mechanics verwijzen naar hoe de achterste heup, knie en voet door de swing vuren — de 'motor'-kant die rotationele kracht van de grond tot in de barrel drijft.

Terwijl de voorkant stabiliseert, genereert de achterkant: de achterste heup drijft voorwaarts en rond, de achterste knie draait naar binnen en richting de werpster, en de achterste teen rolt op de bal van de voet. Een passieve achterkant (heup blijft achter, knie drift in plaats van drijft) is een van de meest over het hoofd geziene bronnen van krachtverlies. Elite slow-pitch-slagvrouwen zijn even agressief met de achterste heup als met de voorkant, wat een volledig-lichaam-knijp creëert die de barrel door de zone versnelt.

Beginner tip

Feel your back elbow drive forward close to your hip like you are elbowing someone behind you. This means this activates the back hip and keeps the elbow from flying away from the body.

Advanced note

Use a medicine ball rotational throw drill. This means stand sideways to a wall, load on the back side, and explosively rotate to throw the ball into the wall. This means this trains the back-hip firing pattern that transfers directly into bat speed.

How it shows up on video

The back side is visible on video from a face-on angle as the trail side of the body. This means the back shoulder, back hip, and back foot. A proper back-side role shows the trail elbow staying close to the body through the early downswing and the back hip firing aggressively through contact before clearing. A passive back side shows the trail elbow flying out early (casting) and the back hip lagging behind or failing to clear. This causes an arm-dominant swing with limited power.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the back shoulder at the start of the swing to try to get under the ball. This tilts the swing plane steeply and produces a high pop-up rather than a level line drive
  • Allowing the back elbow to fly away from the body early in the downswing. This causes the bat to take a longer arc path that wastes the rotational energy the back side was building
  • Spinning the back hip open too early in the load phase, which eliminates the hip-shoulder separation that the back side is responsible for creating
  • Staying passive on the back side and relying entirely on the front side to generate power. This produces a soft arm swing without the hip-drive that makes the back side powerful
