Also known as: 迷惑性, 藏球

Definition

Beginner tip

Practice your changeup in bullpen sessions by calling it out loud only after you release the ball. This means if your coach can guess your pitch type from your delivery before release, you have a tell that needs to be eliminated.

Advanced note

Film your delivery from the batter's perspective (directly in front, from the release point viewpoint) and compare fastball and off-speed reps frame by frame. This means visual tells that are invisible from the side are often obvious from the hitter's sightline.

Example

How it shows up on video

On video, deception quality is assessed by comparing side-by-side footage of different pitch types through the delivery. This means identical arm paths, hip rotations, head positions, and glove tucks across pitch types indicate high deception. Common errors visible on camera include a visible glove-arm swing that varies between pitch types, a head tilt or shoulder dip that appears only on off-speed pitches. A subtle arm-action change. This means shorter pull-down on breaking balls, longer pull-through on fastballs. This means that experienced hitters learn to read as pitch identification cues.

Common mistakes

  • Unconsciously changing head position or tilt between pitch types — even a slight head lean becomes a readable pitch tip at advanced levels of competition
  • Swinging the glove arm outward rather than tucking it to the body. This opens the front side too early and gives the hitter a clear view of the grip and wrist angle before release
  • Using a different balance-point position in the windup for different pitch types, which creates a pre-release tell visible to coaches filming from the press box
  • Over-focusing on arm action uniformity. At the same time, ignoring lower-body tells. This means a different stride length or foot direction for off-speed pitches is equally readable as an arm-action change

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage overlays skeleton-tracking data from different pitch types to quantify mechanical uniformity. This means measuring whether the arm path, hip rotation timing, and release position are statistically identical or systematically different between pitch types. The system ranks mechanical deception tells by detectability, flagging the most obvious ones for immediate correction.
