Also known as: 隧道化, 投球隧道

Definition

Beginner tip

Build your tunnel by first perfecting two pitches that naturally share similar early trajectories from your arm angle. This means for most pitchers, the four-seamer and changeup are the easiest pair to tunnel. This is because the arm action is intentionally identical.

Advanced note

Map your pitch pairs by plotting their early trajectory overlap at 15, 20, and 25 feet from release and deliberately add a pitch type that shares the tunnel window of your best existing pair but diverges later than any current option.

Example

How it shows up on video

On video, tunneling quality is assessed by overlaying two different pitch types released on the same day and measuring how far down the flight path they diverge visually. Well-tunneled pairs are indistinguishable for the first half of the flight path; poorly tunneled pairs show divergence within the first 15 feet. Common errors include pitch types with slightly different launch angles at release (a visible early separation), arm action variations that change the initial trajectory before the ball even begins moving aerodynamically, and uneven release point heights between pitch types.

Common mistakes

  • Pairing pitches that diverge at different arm angles — such as throwing four-seamers over-the-top and breaking balls three-quarter — creating visible early separation that makes tunneling impossible
  • Selecting pitch pairs based on movement profile alone without verifying that the early trajectories actually share the same flight path from the release point
  • Allowing a consistent but suboptimal pitch pair to define the entire arsenal instead of adding a third pitch type that creates a three-way tunnel problem for the hitter
  • Relying on movement magnitude for pitch effectiveness instead of optimising the overlap between the shared early trajectory window and each pitch's divergence point

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage's tunneling analysis overlays trajectory data from different pitch types in the same session, measuring the spatial divergence distance at each foot of flight from the release point. Pitchers receive a tunnel score for each pair and can see exactly where their pitches begin to diverge relative to the hitter's decision point.
