Definition

Beginner tip

Pick a fixed visual reference. This means a spot on the catcher's mitt or a marker on the backstop. This means and focus on reaching that same spatial point on every throw to build proprioceptive awareness of a consistent release position.

Advanced note

After a bullpen session, compare your release point scatter on your first 20 pitches versus your last 20. This means if the cluster grows by a lot, you have identified a fatigue threshold that informs your pitch count limits and conditioning targets.

How it shows up on video

On video, release point consistency is evaluated by overlaying multiple reps from the same angle and measuring where the ball leaves the hand relative to fixed reference points on the body. Common errors visible on camera include the release point drifting toward the head (fatigue-driven elbow collapse), the extension shortening as the pitcher tires (the arm pulls up short of the full extension achieved fresh). The horizontal release point shifting glove-side or arm-side between pitch types. This means indicating the pitcher is unconsciously adjusting for different grips rather than releasing from a fixed point.

Common mistakes

  • Releasing breaking balls from a slightly shorter extension than fastballs. This creates a systematic velocity and trajectory difference that experienced hitters can read before the pitch even begins its movement
  • Ignoring release point drift in the later innings as a "command problem" rather than diagnosing it as a mechanical fatigue marker that requires mechanical intervention
  • Striding at an uneven angle between pitches, which shifts the body's alignment and forces the release point to move to compensate for the stride deviation
  • Confusing release height (the vertical position) with extension (the horizontal distance from the rubber) and addressing only one when both are drifting
