曲球是一种带上旋的变速变化球,进垒时会向下坠落,弧度往往十分明显。
曲球通过手指向前滚动的出手方式产生上旋,使马格努斯力把球向下拉,并根据出手角度产生一定的横向偏移。12-6曲球几乎垂直下坠;1-7曲球则横向扫动更明显。有效的曲球会将大幅度的移动与出手瞬间酷似速球的外观结合起来,然后在打者出棒的一刻“从桌上掉下去”。曲球的控制能力——尤其是能在球数早期投出好球——是区分优秀投手与顶尖投手的关键。

Keep your arm speed the same as your fastball and let the grip and wrist snap create the movement. This means the curveball should feel like you're pulling down a window shade at the last instant.
Vary the curveball's velocity window by 5–8 mph between appearances to prevent hitters from timing the pitch by count. A hard 82 mph curve early in the count and a softer 74 mph curve in two-strike counts creates two distinct timing problems.

How it shows up on video
On video, a correctly thrown curveball shows the same arm speed and path through the release zone as the fastball. Only the wrist snap and finger pull-through distinguish it. Common camera-visible errors include a noticeable slowdown of the arm before release (telegraphing the off-speed pitch), a stiff wrist that produces a loopy pitch with little spin. The elbow dropping below the shoulder which shifts the spin axis and reduces downward break.
Common mistakes
- Slowing the arm down before release to "guide" the curveball, which tips the pitch and reduces spin rate at the same time
- Releasing the ball too early with an open hand, producing a flat pitch with gyroscopic rather than topspin rotation and minimal drop
- Throwing the curveball only when behind in the count, creating a predictable pattern that allows hitters to sit on it in disadvantaged counts
- Collapsing the front side or opening the hips too early, which forces an arm-only delivery that reduces spin efficiency and strains the elbow
