Also known as: 髋部滑动, 顶动

Definition

Beginner tip

To feel the lateral shift, try imagining your lead hip bumping into a wall that is just outside your lead hip at address. This means the bump should be small and trigger your rotation, not replace it.

Advanced note

Use a wall or alignment stick as a reference. This means position it just outside your lead hip at address, then make downswings trying to feel your lead hip "bump" the wall at the start of the downswing before rotating away from it. This means this gives you proprioceptive feedback on whether you are shifting and how much.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, lateral shift is visible as a small horizontal movement of the belt buckle or hip line toward the target at the very start of the downswing, before the hips begin their rotational movement. The trail hip will appear to move slightly toward the target while the shoulders are still mostly square or completing the backswing. Excessive lateral shift looks like the entire lower body sliding well past the ball before rotating. This means the hips end up far in front of the ball at impact rather than rotating around a stable axis.

Common mistakes

  • Excessive lateral sliding (over-shifting). This means sliding the hips too far toward the target produces a "stuck" position, forces the shoulder to come over the top to compensate, or produces a very late flip as the only way to square the face in time.
  • No lateral shift (spinning in place). This means a rotation-only downswing without any lateral shift tends to produce an out-to-in path. This is because the upper body fires at the same time as the lower body, with no bump to create separation.
  • Lateral shifting with the upper body instead of the hips. This means some golfers move their entire center of mass laterally rather than in particular shifting the pelvis. This produces a sway that moves the swing center away from the target and causes fat shots.
  • Timing the lateral shift too late — the lateral shift should be the first thing that happens in the downswing. If it occurs after the shoulders have begun rotating, it is too late to create the sequencing benefit it is meant to produce.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage observes lateral shift from face-on video by tracking the horizontal position of the hip center relative to the ball-stance setup position. The system can identify the absence of lateral shift, appropriate shift amounts, and excessive sliding, with observations labeled by confidence based on video quality and the clarity of the golfer's hip position throughout the swing.
