获得杆数衡量的是球手在每一类击球——发球、进攻、果岭周边和推杆——相对于一个基准(巡回赛平均水平或同水平群体)获得或损失了多少杆。
获得杆数是一套统计框架,用于衡量高尔夫表现,把球手每一击的结果,与一名标准杆球手(0差点)从同样位置完成这个洞所需的预期杆数进行比较。它不像统计上球道命中率或标准杆上果岭率这类原始数据(这些数据没有考虑击球难度),而是衡量每一击相对于基线预期,对最终分数的实际贡献。一击把局面从预期还需3.5杆推进到预期还需2.0杆的情况,相对预期获得了1.5杆的收益,而一击落入麻烦区域,则会带来负的获得杆数。

对业余球手而言,获得杆数的思维方式为练习优先级提供了可操作的洞见。一名每轮在推杆上损失2杆、在发球上损失0.5杆的球手,逻辑上应该把更多的练习时间分配给推杆,而不是发球——无论发球练习感觉有多有趣。获得杆数把情感化的分配(“我想打得更远”)转化为基于证据的分配(“我的数据显示应该练习劈起球”)。
Start tracking your shots by category (tee shots, approach shots, chips and pitches, putts) for 5–10 rounds and count how many shots you take from each area. The area with the most shots relative to par expectations is your largest opportunity for improvement. It is where practice time produces the most scoring improvement.
Use a shot-tracking app (Shot Scope, Arccos, or Game Golf) for a full season and review your strokes gained breakdown at season end. The areas where you lose the most strokes relative to your handicap baseline define your practice priorities for the following season. Golfers who follow data-driven practice prioritization reliably improve faster than those who practice by preference.

How it shows up on video
Strokes gained is a statistical concept measured through shot tracking data rather than observable in individual swing video. However, the areas where strokes are gained or lost can inform which swing elements should be prioritized in video analysis. A golfer who loses the most strokes around the green would benefit from having short game video analyzed most thoroughly. At the same time, one who loses primarily off the tee would prioritize full-swing video review.
Common mistakes
- Using strokes gained data from a single round — strokes gained results are highly variable round to round. Reliable patterns require at least 20–50 rounds of data before conclusions about areas of strength and weakness can be trusted.
- Treating strokes gained categories as independent. This means a poor driving result can increase the difficulty of approach shots. This makes it appear that approach is a weakness when the root problem is driving. Categories interact with each other, and causation should be interpreted carefully.
- Ignoring strokes gained and practicing what feels good — emotional satisfaction from driving practice does not correlate with improvement potential. Data-driven practice allocation reliably produces faster improvement than intuitive allocation.
- Applying tour-level baselines to recreational golf — the average tour player's strokes gained baseline is not appropriate for calculating recreational golfer strokes gained. Handicap-adjusted databases or apps that use appropriate baselines for each skill level are needed for meaningful recreational analysis.
