Definition

Beginner tip

Feel for your back heel rising off the ground at contact. This means if it stays flat, your hips have not rotated fully and there is significant power left on the table.

Advanced note

Practice hip-stop reps where you deliberately pause at maximum hip rotation before continuing the swing. This means this isolates and strengthens the rotational movement. As a result, it becomes explosive and automatic in live swings.

Example

How it shows up on video

Check the back foot at contact — the heel should be elevated with the foot rotated onto its toe, confirming full hip rotation. From a front view, the lead hip should be visibly past the front plane of the body at contact, not still facing the pitcher. Watch for the back knee driving inward and forward as the hip turns. This means a stationary back knee confirms incomplete hip rotation regardless of what the upper body is doing.

Common mistakes

  • Sliding the front hip forward toward the pitcher rather than turning it back and around, producing a lunge with no rotational power
  • Opening the hips too early during the load so they are already rotated before the ball arrives, leaving no hip turn available at contact
  • Keeping the back foot flat through the swing rather than rolling onto the toe, which prevents the hip from completing its rotation
  • Confusing hip turn with shoulder turn — opening only the shoulders while the hips remain square loses the critical kinetic-chain sequence

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage measures hip rotation angle at the contact frame and compares it to shoulder rotation to compute the hip-shoulder separation value. This directly correlates with available bat speed.
