Definition

Beginner tip

Check your finish. This means if you can hold your finish position for three full seconds with nearly all weight on your lead leg and the trail foot balanced on its toe, your weight transfer is correct.

Advanced note

Train weight transfer with a drill. This means start with your feet together, then stride with your front foot and immediately swing. This means the forced stride makes the transfer sequential and physical rather than something to think about.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a front-on camera, weight transfer shows the trail heel lifting off the ground during the downswing as the majority of body mass moves toward the lead side. A reverse pivot shows opposite movement: the lead hip drifts backward while the trail foot stays grounded through the entire swing. The finish position is a reliable indicator. This means a hitter who cannot hold their finish with 90 percent of weight on the lead leg has not completed their weight transfer.

Common mistakes

  • Reverse pivoting by loading the lead foot in the load phase rather than the trail foot. This puts weight on the wrong side going into the swing and destroys power
  • Hanging back and failing to complete the transfer to the lead side through contact. This forces the hands to flip at the ball to compensate for the stalled lower body
  • Sliding the entire body toward the pitcher instead of rotating around a stable lead leg, which moves the swing center off the ball
  • Transferring weight too early by lunging toward the pitcher before the pitch arrives, arriving with all weight shifted and no stored energy left to rotate into the ball

SwingVantage tracks trail heel lift timing and lead-leg firmness through the contact frame to evaluate weight transfer completeness, identifying reverse pivot and hang-back patterns from face-on video.
