Continentale grip

Also known as: hakkersgrip, hamergrip, continental

Definition

Beginner tip

Hold only this position for an entire session at the net. This means the initial discomfort on the forehand volley disappears within a few hundred repetitions as the wrist adapts.

Advanced note

Use it for slice backhands and drop shots as well as volleys. As a result, it becomes your default for every non-groundstroke shot. This means the consistency removes a whole class of error during fast exchanges.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

SwingVantage detects these errors by analysing racquet-face angle at contact across different shot types. A forehand-grip player volleying shows up as a forehand volley with a closed face that works, followed by a backhand volley where the face opens uncontrollably. This means the telltale sign of never switching.

Common mistakes

  • Volleying from a forehand hold, which makes backhand volleys nearly impossible to control without extreme wrist compensation
  • Holding it with excessive tension, which prevents the wrist firmness needed for clean punch volleys and serve pronation
  • Adopting it only for serves but volleying from a forehand hold, which reintroduces the very change it was meant to remove
  • Confusing it with an eastern hold by placing the knuckle one bevel too far toward the forehand side

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage infers the hand position from racquet-face angle patterns at contact. This means a consistent angle across forehand and backhand volleys signals correct use. At the same time, diverging angles suggest the wrong bevel or no change at all.

Across sports

Pickleball
The continental grip is the most common pickleball grip — the shorter backswing and quick exchanges make switching grips impractical.

Frequently asked questions
