Kontinental Kavrama
Also known as: chopper grip, çekiç grip, continental
Tips by skill level
Hold only this position for an entire session at the net — the initial discomfort on the forehand volley disappears within a few hundred repetitions as the wrist adapts.
Use it for slice backhands and drop shots as well as volleys. As a result, it becomes your default for every non-groundstroke shot — the consistency removes a whole class of error during fast exchanges.
Example
Why it matters
This is the foundation of the net game. Players who volley from a semi-western forehand produce only forehand volleys — the backhand cannot be hit from the same hand position. Motion Lab does not read your grip, so check your hand position at contact on video.
How it shows up on video
On video, spot these errors by pausing at contact and comparing the racquet face across different shot types. A forehand-grip player volleying shows up as a forehand volley with a closed face that works, followed by a backhand volley where the face opens uncontrollably — the telltale sign of never switching.
Common mistakes
- Volleying from a forehand hold, which makes backhand volleys nearly impossible to control without extreme wrist compensation
- Holding it with excessive tension, which prevents the wrist firmness needed for clean punch volleys and serve pronation
- Adopting it only for serves but volleying from a forehand hold, which reintroduces the very change it was meant to remove
- Confusing it with an eastern hold by placing the knuckle one bevel too far toward the forehand side
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab does not measure racquet-face angle, so it cannot infer your grip. Pause your video at contact on forehand and backhand volleys. A consistent face angle signals correct use; diverging angles suggest the wrong bevel or no change at all.
Across sports
- Pickleball
- The continental grip is the most common pickleball grip — the shorter backswing and quick exchanges make switching grips impractical.
Frequently asked questions
