(Power Leak)
The fastest power leak to fix for most recreational golfers is casting. This means simply feel that your hands lead the clubhead into the ball. This means if you can achieve this one thing, you have plugged the most common and costly energy leak in the amateur swing.
Use a launch monitor to measure ball speed versus clubhead speed efficiency (smash factor). This means a smash factor below 1.44 for driver suggests contact quality or energy-transfer issues beyond just swing speed, pointing to specific impact-zone leaks like early release or off-center hits that are worth investigating even if the path and face are correct.
Example
How it shows up on video
Power leaks manifest differently depending on the type. This means a reverse pivot is visible from face-on as the weight moving toward the target in the backswing and backward in the downswing. Casting shows as the shaft losing angle early from a down-the-line view. Early extension shows from face-on as the hips thrusting toward the ball at impact rather than rotating. A disconnected arm swing shows as a gap appearing between the lead arm and the chest in the downswing. Any of these observable patterns represents a power leak.
Common mistakes
- Trying to fix power leaks with more effort — increased effort applied to a leaky system produces more turbulence, not more output. Each specific leak requires a specific structural fix, not harder swinging.
- Fixing the wrong leak first — golfers who address a secondary leak while ignoring the primary one see minimal improvement. Starting with the leak closest to the ground (reverse pivot, early extension) before addressing upper-chain leaks (casting, disconnection) is the most efficient sequence.
- Assuming all power leaks are technique problems. This means some leaks are physical. This means insufficient hip mobility that forces early extension, or weak core that allows the arm-body connection to break down. Physical training may be required alongside technique work.
- Using distance as the only metric — ball speed (not carry distance) is the most direct indicator of power chain efficiency. Wind, altitude, launch angle, and spin all affect carry; ball speed isolates the energy delivery at impact.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage identifies power leaks by observing the specific patterns that indicate energy loss in the kinetic chain: reverse pivot, casting, early extension, and arm-body disconnection. Each is visible in video from specific camera angles. The system flags which leaks are observable in available footage with appropriate confidence labels based on video quality and camera positioning.
