Hip Turn

Also known as: hip rotation, pelvic rotation

Definition

Beginner tip

To feel proper hip turn, place an alignment stick across your hips (held in the loops of your belt) at address. In the backswing, turn until the stick points behind the ball. In the downswing, rotate the stick to point at the target and then past it. This means this physical reference teaches the rotational rather than lateral hip movement.

Advanced note

Train hip turn sequencing with the "hip-first" drill. This means take your address, pause, then deliberately start your downswing by rotating ONLY your lead hip toward the target for a full second before anything else moves. This means this exaggerated isolation drill teaches the kinesthetic feel of lower-body initiation before building it into a continuous motion.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, hip turn is visible in the backswing as the trail hip moving toward the right (for a right-hander). At the same time, the body coils, and in the downswing as the lead hip rotating toward and then behind the golfer through impact. At impact, the lead hip should appear to be "pointing" past the ball — by a lot open relative to the target line. Insufficient hip turn in the downswing (stalled hips) shows the hips appearing square or only slightly open at impact. From a down-the-line angle, the hip turn quality is visible as whether the hips are rotating on the correct plane or sliding laterally.

Common mistakes

  • Lateral hip sway instead of rotation — the hips moving sideways without rotating is a sway. The hips should turn around the spine, not slide away from it. A sway reduces coil and creates a moving axis that makes consistent contact difficult.
  • Insufficient hip turn initiation in the downswing — waiting for the shoulder rotation to begin before the hips move is the most common cause of over-the-top. The hips should fire first, period.
  • Spinning the hips out too early. This means excessive and premature hip rotation that happens before the arms have delivered the club into the hitting zone produces a "stuck" feeling and pushed or blocked shots.
  • Restricting hip turn beyond physical capacity. This means forcing an artificial hip restriction beyond what hip mobility comfortably allows causes compensation (standing up, swaying) and increases injury risk. Work with available mobility rather than against it.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage tracks hip rotation from face-on video using pose estimation to observe the orientation of the hip line relative to the target line at key positions. This means top of backswing, impact, and finish. The system can identify sway patterns (lateral instead of rotational), stalled hips at impact, and premature spin-out, with observations labeled by confidence based on video quality.
