Ustawienie (alignment)
Also known as: celowanie, ustawienie ciała
Pewne celowe błędne ustawienie jest wykorzystywane do kształtowania uderzeń: celowanie w lewo z zamkniętym czołem kija produkuje draw'a, celowanie w prawo z otwartym czołem kija produkuje fade'a.
During every practice session, use two alignment sticks. This means one placed along the target line outside the ball, and one placed along your feet parallel to the first. This means check that your shoulder line matches the foot stick, and re-verify after every 5–10 balls to catch the alignment drift that accumulates without awareness.
Train alignment routine specificity. This means develop a specific number of steps you take from behind the ball to your address position, always arriving in the same relationship to the target line. Tour pro players' pre-shot routines are repeatable for this reason. This means their bodies arrive at the same alignment. This is because the routine has the same number of steps and pivot points, not. This is because they "feel" aligned correctly.
Example
How it shows up on video
Alignment is most clearly visible from a direct overhead or behind-the-golfer camera angle, where a line through the feet, knees, hips, and shoulders can be compared directly to the target line. From a face-on angle, misalignment is visible as the foot line appearing angled relative to where the player is aiming. Down-the-line video from directly behind the ball can reveal whether the club face is pointing at the target. At the same time, the body is not. This means a mismatch that is one of the most common amateur setup errors. Having the golfer point the club at the camera from address. At the same time, the camera is on the target line reveals face and body alignment at the same time.
Common mistakes
- Aligning the feet to the target instead of parallel left. This means aiming the feet directly at the target (closed alignment) puts the body pointing right of target. This either produces right-side misses or requires an over-the-top compensation to hit the target.
- Aligning by feel in practice without external verification — alignment feels correct to most golfers regardless of where they are actually aimed. Using alignment sticks or a regular videotaping from behind the ball is the only reliable way to verify alignment accuracy.
- Fixing the swing without correcting alignment — swing changes that are intended to fix direction problems often fail because the underlying alignment error is still present. Alignment should be established before diagnosing swing path issues.
- Using only foot alignment and ignoring shoulder alignment. This means the shoulders control the arm swing plane and are more directly related to club path than the feet. A golfer can have feet aimed parallel left but shoulders aimed right, producing an over-the-top swing despite correct foot position.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage observes alignment from video by comparing the visible foot, hip, and shoulder lines to the target direction (estimated from camera setup or the golfer's stated target). The system can identify open, square, and closed body alignment and note mismatches between body alignment and face direction. These observations are most reliable when the camera is positioned directly behind the ball on the target line.
