(Chip-and-Run)
To get comfortable with chip-and-run, practice one club at a time. This means use only your 8-iron for all short-game shots in one practice session, and learn exactly how far it flies and how far it rolls from different distances. Once you know your 8-iron chip-and-run intimately, you have a go-to club for open-green situations.
Develop a mental formula for your key chip-and-run clubs: for example, "7-iron chip-and-run: I carry it 1/4 of total distance, roll it 3/4. For a 30-foot shot, I land it at 7.5 feet and it rolls 22.5 feet." Having this formula reduces decision-making on the course to a quick calculation rather than a guess. This produces better distance control under pressure.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, a chip-and-run looks nearly identical to any other chip stroke — compact, shoulder-driven, with forward shaft lean at impact. The key distinguishing element is what happens after impact. This means the ball lands quickly and then rolls a long distance. This produces a much flatter initial trajectory than a wedge chip shot. The lower-lofted club used for a chip-and-run is visible from any angle. From a down-the-line angle, the technique is on a slightly more upright plane than a full iron shot but in the same general address position as any chip.
Common mistakes
- Using the chip-and-run when the situation requires a higher shot. This means in soft conditions, with rough between the ball and green, or with a tight pin location requiring the ball to stop quickly, the chip-and-run is the wrong choice. A pitch or lob shot may be required.
- Selecting too much loft and expecting too much roll — a sand wedge chip-and-run does not roll like a 7-iron chip-and-run. The club must match the intended fly-to-roll ratio, or the distance control will be off.
- Using wrist action on the chip-and-run — the same no-wrist-action principle that applies to all chipping applies to the chip-and-run. Wrist action adds variability and removes the predictability that makes chip-and-run reliable.
- Failing to account for grain and green speed in the rolling phase. This means the chip-and-run's longer roll makes it more susceptible to green speed and grain influences. Read the putt line as carefully as you would a full-length putt when planning chip-and-run shots.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage evaluates chip-and-run shots from face-on video using the same chipping analysis framework — shaft lean at impact, lead wrist position, and body motion. The system notes the club selection (lower loft) as a contextual element relevant to interpreting the shot's intended fly-to-roll ratio. Confidence labels are based on video quality and camera positioning.
