中路球（Middle Ball）

中路球是在双打中直接瞄准两名对手之间的一记击球，目的是制造关于该由谁来处理这球的混乱，从而引发沟通失误。
在双打中，这个区域会迫使搭档之间在电光石火之间做出“该我还是该你”的决定。根据规则，这里也是球网最低的位置，这为这个区域在战术优势之外又增添了几何上的优势。当双方球员都期待对方来处理球时，要么谁都不动，要么两人都动——造成碰撞或非受迫性失误。在更高水平的比赛中，瞄准会进一步收窄——瞄准较强一方球员的反手，或较弱一方不太可靠的正手。
这里重叠着两种独立的优势：一种是几何上的，一种是人为因素上的。球网在中央处高34英寸，在球网柱处则是36英寸，因此中央本身就是场上最低的屏障。人为因素则是覆盖上的模糊性：即便是经验丰富的搭档，在球速很快、沟通不够完美的情况下，也会在这里犹豫或相撞。速度正是激活这种模糊性的因素——一记慢球会给搭档留出时间干净地把这个决定协商清楚。
一件起初粗糙的武器，最终会变成一件精准的工具。高水平的组合会识别出哪一方的正手拥有中路的所有权——如果双方都是右打球手，通常是左侧球员——然后瞄准这项责任接缝的反手一侧。这利用了一种真实的倾向：即便处于更好的位置，人们也倾向于在反手一侧把球让给搭档。
Aim at the backhand side of whoever covers the centre. This means the backhand is harder to power and far likelier to pop up weakly than a planted forehand.
Vary pace and spin. This means a heavy topspin roll at shoelace height is harder to coordinate than a flat drive. This is. This is because whoever takes it must hit up on a moving target.

Common mistakes
- Going at medium pace, which gives partners time to communicate and one of them to take it cleanly
- Targeting the exact geometric center rather than the backhand-responsibility seam between the two opponents
- Attacking a ball below net height, which forces an upward swing that sails long
- Going there so predictably that opponents establish a coverage rule and remove the ambiguity entirely
