Also known as: 屠杀规则, 让分规则
Treat every inning as if there's no mercy rule. This means playing through a big deficit builds mental toughness that will serve you in close games throughout the season.
From a pitching and defensive standpoint, in a large lead scenario, prioritize getting the mercy-rule win by recording outs efficiently rather than trying for strikeouts or perfect mechanics.
Example
How it shows up on video
The mercy rule is the same as the run rule — a game-ending threshold that stops play when the outcome is no longer competitive. Its application is visible in umpires consulting the scoreboard and announcing the game's end before the scheduled final inning. Teams may begin collecting equipment before the inning concludes.
Common mistakes
- Confusing which innings trigger the mercy rule — applying 20-run rules to the wrong inning due to unfamiliarity with the specific league policy
- Not informing newer players about the mercy rule, causing confusion when the game ends unexpectedly
- Using the mercy rule's existence as an excuse to give up rather than treating the trailing situation as a challenge
- As the leading team, not knowing the mercy rule and continuing to try maximizing your score rather than just maintaining it
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can contextualize performance data from mercy-rule games differently, noting that late-game plate appearances in blowouts may not reflect the player's competitive performance level.
