リレー送球とは、外野からのボールを、それを迎えに走り出た内野手に渡し、すぐに次へ送るというものです。一人の腕では速さと正確さの両方を伴って距離をカバーできないときに使われます。
フェンスまでの長打では、警告トラックからプレートまでの一投は通常、途中で失速するか大きくそれてしまいます。中堅内野手が中間地点まで全力で走り、構え、受け取り、そして一つの動作で送球します。これがうまくいくかどうかは2つのスキルにかかっています。外野手がバウンドさせずに直接その野手を見つけられるかどうか、そしてその野手が余分なステップを踏まずに振り向いて送球できるかどうかです。
フィールドの寸法は、選手が思っている以上にスローピッチでこれを価値あるものにしています。大人用のフェンスは一般的に約275~315フィートの位置にあり、これは適切に配置された2段階のシーケンスが本物の勢いを持ってプレートに到達するのに十分な短さです。これを省略して外野手にただ遠投させるチームは、フィールドが与えてくれているアウトをみすみす手放しています。
Keep your glove raised as a target and shout your position. This means the outfielder has just chased a ball to the fence and needs to find you fast.
Perfect the exchange: receive on your throwing-arm side, spin inside toward your glove side to square up, and release in one continuous motion.

ボールが中堅のフェンスまで転がる。ショートが走り出て流れの中でボールを受け取り、本塁へ送球して得点を狙う走者を刺す。
Why it matters
こうした短めのフェンス距離は、2段階の選択肢が理論上ではなく本当に生きた選択肢であることを意味しており、これを練習しているチームは、他のチームなら自動的な得点だと諦めてしまうプレーをアウトに変えます。
How it shows up on video
Watch the receiving fielder's footwork — taking the ball on the throwing-arm side, spinning inside, and releasing without an extra step. A good delivery arrives shoulder-high and goes on to the target on a straight line.
Common mistakes
- The outfielder delivering it too high, so the receiving fielder waits for the ball to come down
- Not lining up between the outfielder and the target base, which creates an angled second leg
- Failing to redirect something poorly aimed — the fielder in the middle is an active funnel, not a stationary target
- Taking extra shuffle steps after the catch instead of receiving and releasing in one motion
