For the driver, use this simple tee height rule. This means when you sole the driver normally at address, half the ball should be above the top edge of the club. If less than half is above the top, tee it higher; if most of the ball is above the top, tee it lower.
Use a launch monitor to test three tee heights (your normal height, 1/4 inch higher, and 1/4 inch lower) with 5 shots at each. Compare the average spin rate and ball speed — the tee height with the lowest spin combined with the highest ball speed is your optimal setting. Even a 200 RPM spin reduction from tee height adjustment can add 5–8 yards of carry at driver speeds above 100 mph.
Example
How it shows up on video
Tee height is directly visible in setup video from face-on and down-the-line angles. This means the ball should appear to sit at the top edge of the clubface when the driver is soled at address. From face-on, a too-high tee shows the ball sitting by a lot above the crown of the driver. A too-low tee shows the ball below the top edge. The consequences of incorrect tee height are visible in the trajectory. This means a skied ball (high and short) typically indicates a too-high tee with an ascending attack. A low, spinny drive indicates a too-low tee with a descending attack.
Common mistakes
- Using the same tee height for every shot — different hole shapes, wind conditions, and shot shapes require different tee heights. A higher tee promotes a draw (reduces spin, higher launch); a lower tee promotes a controlled fade (more spin, lower launch). Adjusting tee height for specific shots adds versatility.
- Not adjusting tee height for different drivers. This means a 460cc driver head sits higher off the ground than a 400cc head. This requires a different tee height to achieve the same face contact zone. Tee height should be calibrated to the specific driver being used.
- Ignoring tee height as a distance variable. This means many golfers work extensively on swing changes to add distance without ever checking whether their tee height is optimal. Tee height is a free distance variable that can add 10–20 yards when optimized.
- Using a bent or broken tee without realizing it. This means a tee that is bent or partially broken sits the ball at an unexpected angle or height. This produces unintended contact patterns. Use a new tee for every drive when precision matters.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can observe tee height from face-on setup video, noting the position of the ball relative to the top edge of the driver. The system can flag setups where the tee height appears substantially above or below the conventional guideline (ball equator at top edge) and note the potential trajectory consequences. Ball flight visible in video confirms whether the tee height is producing the intended trajectory.
