Methodology, limits & safe use FAQ

How SwingVantage decides what to show, where automated analysis stops, and when to bring in a coach, trainer or medical professional.

Does SwingVantage replace a coach?

No. It reads your swing from a phone video, picks one priority, and helps you practise and retest it between lessons. A coach can watch you in person, see what one camera misses, adjust things on the spot and look after your safety — SwingVantage cannot.

More detail

Its reads come from a single camera, so they are estimates with a confidence level, not the full picture a coach builds from watching you live, from several angles, over many reps.

It is most useful between sessions: you know the one thing to work on, you have drills for it, and a retest shows whether it moved. Take that to your coach — share a summary with them — and let them confirm or change the priority.

What does "heuristics first, AI when needed" mean?

Your results come from SwingVantage’s own coaching rules, applied to the movement tracked on your device. AI is optional extra help for explaining or going deeper; your fix, plan and retest never depend on it.

More detail

Rules are repeatable: the same evidence gives the same answer, and each finding can be traced back to what was seen in your clip. That is what lets a retest compare like with like.

Where AI features are available they sit on top. AI Coach can answer conversationally, and Ask can use AI to word an answer from SwingVantage’s own coaching library. When AI is off, AI Coach answers from its built-in coach and Ask answers straight from the library — and Ask never changes your One Fix or plan.

Does SwingVantage give medical advice?

No. SwingVantage gives practice guidance and educational feedback about technique. It does not assess or treat injuries or tell you whether you are fit to play — that is for a doctor, physical therapist or other qualified professional.

More detail

The boundary is built into the product. Pain or injury questions in Ask are answered with a safety note first — stop any movement that hurts and see a qualified medical professional — and a parent or guardian setting up a young athlete’s account acknowledges that SwingVantage is not medical advice.

Movement reads such as balance or rotation are coaching estimates from video, not clinical tests of your joints or body. The Terms of Service say the same: SwingVantage is not a substitute for medical or physical therapy advice.

What should I do if a drill or swing causes pain?

Stop the movement that hurts and get it checked by a qualified medical professional before you practise it again. Do not keep working through pain to finish a plan or improve a retest.

More detail

SwingVantage cannot see what is causing pain, how serious it is, or whether a drill suits your body right now. A new movement feeling unfamiliar is normal when you change technique; pain is not.

When you return, tell your coach or medical professional what you were working on and ask which drills are appropriate. If you ask Ask SwingVantage about pain, it gives the same answer: stop any movement that hurts, and see a qualified professional.

How should I act on a finding that is uncertain or low-confidence?

Treat it as a lead to check, not a verdict. Improve the evidence before you rebuild your swing around it: re-film using the quality check’s advice, then see whether the same finding shows up again.

More detail
  1. Read the label. An estimated or inferred read is a training estimate, not a measurement — see measured, estimated and inferred.
  2. Check the capture. If the quality check says Limited, Difficult capture or Not defensible from this angle, a better clip will tell you more than practice will.
  3. Look for repetition. A finding that appears across several good clips deserves more weight than one that appears once.
  4. Retest under the same conditions. An Inconclusive or "Low confidence" retest means the conditions differed or the clips were too hard to compare — not that you failed.

If the finding matters to you and the evidence is still thin, ask a coach to look. See also when there is not enough evidence.

Where can I read how SwingVantage’s analysis works?

On three public pages: the sport-by-sport video analysis page, the methodology overview, and Accuracy & limitations. Together they cover what each sport’s analysis reads, what it does not claim, and how labels and confidence work.

More detail
  • What video analysis can see — for each live sport, the signals it reads, what it does not claim, and its confidence ceiling.
  • Methodology — the difference between measured and estimated results, how confidence is decided, and why a coach should check the priority.
  • Accuracy & limitations — what the analysis can help with, what it cannot promise, and when to bring in a coach or medical professional.

For shorter answers, the accuracy questions in this FAQ cover confidence, camera limits and evidence labels.

What will SwingVantage never claim about my swing?

It will not present an estimate as a measurement, promise a score or distance, give medical advice, or claim lab-quality 3D measurement from one phone camera. When a clip cannot support a read, it says so instead of guessing.

More detail
  • No outcome promises — it does not guarantee a score, distance or competitive result.
  • No medical conclusions, and no workload or arm-stress read from pitching video.
  • No certified club fitting.
  • No "Worse" verdict from a shaky comparison. A retest only calls a change worse when the two clips are closely comparable and the drop is clear; a mismatched or hard-to-read pair comes out as "Low confidence" or Inconclusive instead.
  • No permanent label from one clip. Your results describe how you moved in that analysis, not a fixed trait.

The numbers phone video does not measure at all are listed in what SwingVantage does not measure, and each sport’s limits are on what video analysis can see.

How do I use SwingVantage responsibly?

Film only yourself or people who have agreed to it — with a parent or guardian’s consent for any minor. Practise within your limits, stop anything that hurts, and treat results as guidance to check with a coach, not a final word.

More detail
  • You are responsible for your own physical safety when you practise drills.
  • Athletes under 18 should train under adult supervision.
  • If injury risk is a concern, do not rely on SwingVantage as your only source of coaching.
  • Do not upload video of someone else without their consent.
  • Do not try to reach other people’s data, scrape the service, or get around its protections.

The full rules are in the Terms of Service.
