Achterhand

Also known as: backhand-groundstroke, eenhandige backhand

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Turn your shoulders fully so your back is almost facing the net before you swing forward — the follow-through will take care of itself.

Advanced note

Train hip-shoulder separation on the backhand by initiating the forward swing with your hips while keeping your shoulders coiled a split second longer. This creates a more powerful torso snap.

Example

Why it matters

Most recreational players have a weaker backhand than forehand. Motion Lab estimates your shoulder turn, swing path and contact timing, which helps show where the breakdown starts.

How it shows up on video

On video, check for a complete shoulder coil on the backswing, contact in front of the body, and a follow-through above the front shoulder. On a one-hander, the trailing shoulder dropping too low before contact is a common visible error. On the two-hander, pulling the lead elbow away shows up clearly.

Common mistakes

  • Failing to complete the shoulder turn on the backswing, producing a short, pushed shot
  • Contacting the ball late and behind the front hip, losing pace and depth
  • Pulling the lead elbow outward on a two-hander, which opens the racquet face prematurely
  • Not finishing the follow-through above the front shoulder, cutting off swing arc and spin

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab estimates your shoulder turn before the forward swing, your spacing at contact and whether contact is early or late. That shows whether you coil fully and meet the ball out in front.

Across sports

Pickleball
In pickleball the backhand is critical at the non-volley zone for dinking cross-court; grip pressure stays light.
Padel
Padel backhands are often defensive redirections off the side wall, requiring open-stance positioning.

Frequently asked questions
